Religion: Tenure-Track, Assistant Professor

Religion – Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Religion beginning in August of the 2018-2019 academic year. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus.  Rock Island, Illinois, is part of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents, located about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.
We seek a candidate with expertise in the study of race and/or ethnicity and religion. The candidate should complement and extend the department’s existing strengths in South and East Asian religions, Islam, theology, scripture, and Christian ethics. Additional expertise and focuses might include one or more of the following: political theory/theology; feminist, womanist, or murjerista approaches to religion; ecofeminism and/or environmental ethics; Catholicism; Pentecostalism; the relationship between Christianities and indigenous religious traditions; and other contemporary religious movements beyond North America and Western Europe. Candidates should have graduate-level training in theories and methods pertaining to the study of religion. Training in post-colonial studies, race and ethnic studies, cross-cultural engagement, and/or gender studies is desirable. Expertise in relevant languages is expected. Preference will be given to candidates who will have completed the Ph.D. by August 2018
Teaching expectations will change in the second year of this position, as Augustana will be moving to a two-semester (plus January intensive term) curriculum beginning in 2019-2020. The teaching expectation will then be 6 courses per year, with 3 sections of the “Reasoned Examination of Faith” college-wide requirement, which faculty can tailor to draw on their strengths and research interests.  For the 2018-2019 year, the expectation will be 7 classes spread over three terms, 3-4 of which will serve as one of the required, sophomore-level Christian traditions offerings (candidate will choose between “American Christianities,” “Global Christianities,” and others), and 1 of which will be a section of the Religion major/minor “gateway” course: RELG 155: Encountering Religion.
