Communication Studies: tenure-track, open rank

Augustana College invites applications for an open rank tenure-track position in communication studies beginning August 2017. Augustana College is a selective liberal arts college of approximately 2,500 students, most of whom live on a wooded 115-acre campus.  Rock Island, Illinois, is part of the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse metropolitan area with 400,000 residents, located about three hours west of Chicago and 45 minutes east of Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa.
Position summary:  Teach undergraduate Comm courses, including Organizational Comm and related courses, as demonstrated by instructional experience and/or graduate course work and research.  We are open to a wide range of expertise for this position that relates to organizational communication, broadly conceived.  Other responsibilities include: advising students; participating in course and program development; pursuing scholarly and professional activities; performing college and professional service; working cooperatively with diverse groups; and helping  students engage with, lead, and serve their communities.
Program distinctions: Our department is one of the college’s largest; it’s high-achieving, cheerful, collaborative and flexible.  Our curriculum has twice received NCA’s Rex Mix award for excellence, we are regularly called upon to provide leadership to the campus and community, and we work with a bright diverse and ambitious group of students.  Augustana transitions from trimesters to semesters in 2019, so our new colleague will help re-imagine and reconstruct our major.
We encourage applicants with demonstrated success in working with diverse populations.  Ph.D. is strongly preferred, although ABD will be considered.  Details about Augustana College, our expectation of the faculty, the selection process and the Quad Cities all are available at the Faculty Search website: http://www.augustanafaculty.org.
Questions may be directed to the chair of the department, David Snowball, at snowball@augustana.edu.
We will be able to meet with interested candidates at the 2016 NCA Conference in November.  Review of applications will begin December 1, 2016 and continue until the position is filled.
A complete application includes:

  • A letter of application
  • curriculum vitae
  • copy of graduate transcript
  • three letters of recommendation ( including contact information)
  • a teaching statement or teaching philosophy
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness
